Cornhill, Dorchester

  Cornhill in Dorchester has been used as a town square for over 800 years and dates back to Medieval times.The brief for this project was to engage the community and create concept designs to update the town square. The square is currently the location of the Christmas tree, regular choir and music performances, various events by the local museum.

  I wanted to create a design framework that was shaped by the way that people move through and use the space and on a daily, seasonal and annual basis and collaborated with Emma Mcewen to design a set of  1:1 giant foam building blocks. 

  We engaged people on street and invited them to play with the foam blocks, placing and building with them to suggest future landscape interventions. The foam blocks were fun and the engagement also led to fruitful conversations and discussions with people about what ‘could’ happen in that space.

  This approach showed how playful, embodied learning can successfully generate the highly rigorous ‘evidence base’ which formed the basis of further collaboration with UBU, landscape design.

  Feria Urbanism continues to use the foam blocks in their engagement with communities.
